    Aperol is an Italian aperitif originally produced by the Barbieri company, based in Padua. Aperol is now produced by the Campari company. While Aperol was originally created in 1919, it did not become successful until after World War II. Its ingredients are, among others, bitter orange, gentian, rhubarb, and cinchona. Although it looks, tastes, and smells much like Campari but is sweeter.[citation needed], Aperol has an alcohol content of 11% – a little less than half of Campari. Campari is also slightly darker in color. Aperol is the main ingredient in Spritz.

The name hints at the origins of the gin’s popularity in the India of the days of the British Raj and the sapphire in question is the Star of Bombay on display at the Smithsonian Institution Bombay Sapphire is marketed in a flat-sided, sapphire-coloured bottle that bears a likeness of Queen Victoria on the label.

  • Campari

    Campari was invented in 1860 by Gaspare Campari in Novara, Italy. It was originally coloured with carmine dye, derived from crushed cochineal insects, which gave the drink its distinctive red colour. In 2006, Gruppo Campari ceased using carmine in its production. Campari is an alcoholic liqueur, considered an apéritif, obtained from the infusion of herbs and fruit (including chinotto and cascarilla) in alcohol and water. Campari is often used in cocktails and is commonly served with soda water, prosecco or citrus juice.

  • Tanqueray

    Tanqueray Gin was initially distilled in 1830 by Charles Tanqueray in the Bloomsbury district of London. When Charles died in 1868 his son Charles Waugh Tanqueray inherited the distillery, which operated until it was severely damaged in World War II. Only one of the facilities survived the Axis bombing. The remaining one, now known as “Old Tom”, has since been moved to Cameron Bridge, Scotland.
